Folklore Museum of the Lyceum Club of Greek Women

 

The Lyceum Club of Greek Women of Drama was founded in 1946 with the aim of boosting the morale of the local community after the hardships of the dual German-Bulgarian occupation.

 

Its mission is twofold: on the one hand, to collect valuable folklore material from the wider region and to preserve and promote elements of traditional culture, including folk dances, local costumes, music and folk songs; on the other hand, to contribute to the empowerment of Greek women by offering support and moral assistance to mothers and children.

 

During its 79 years of activity, it has earned an international reputation through its participation in numerous folk dance festivals around the world, winning first prizes and receiving international distinctions.

 

In addition to its dance groups, the Lyceum also operates traditional weaving and traditional choir sections.

 

It has organised scientific conferences on folk culture and dance, focusing on research, music, traditional costumes and stage performance, and has published the collective volume “Choreftika Eteroklita”, which is used in Greek universities.

 

It has also published the photographic album “Colourful Weaves and Silver Ornaments”, the CD “SIRIS” featuring dances and songs from the areas of Irakleia, Pontismeno and Xirotopos in the Regional Unit of Serres, as well as a DVD presenting the re-enactment of the Sokianidikos Wedding.

 

In recent years, it has organised a three-day tradition and culture event entitled “Aroma of Greece”, as well as a Festival of Myths, Stories and Folk Tales.
