Lisse Fort

Lisse Fort is located in the Regional Unit of Drama and is one of the 21 defensive fortifications that formed the so-called Metaxas Line along the Greek-Bulgarian border.

 

During the Second World War, the fort included a total of 1,849 metres of shelters and 4,251 metres of tunnels, constructed inside the hill that dominates the Nevrokopi plain. It is situated a short distance east of the village of Ochyro and about 2 kilometres from Kato Nevrokopi.

 

Lisse Fort was designated as the “flagship” of the Metaxas Line and became one of the most important defensive positions of the Greek Army, successfully repelling German attacks until 10 April 1941.

 

Despite the intensity of the attacks, the fort was never captured. It was surrendered only after the general capitulation of Greece, when Thessaloniki fell into German hands.
