Alistrati Cave

Alistrati Cave is a site of worldwide significance, under the administration of the Municipality of Nea Zichni and the Region of Central Macedonia. It is one of the largest caves in Europe, featuring a rich natural decoration that includes:

 

– Huge stalactites and stalagmites in a variety of colours.

– Rare eccentrics (helictites). Eccentrics, or helictites, are rare cave formations that appear to “defy” the laws of gravity by growing in irregular directions. The cave’s most distinctive feature—and what makes it unique in Greece—is the great variety of these formations.

– Shields (or cave palettes).

– Cave pearls.

 

The cave is also known for its unique microscopic organisms (approximately 3 mm in size), such as Alistratia beroni, a unique species of isopod found only inside the cave.

 

The cave has been developed for tourism and has been open to visitors since 1998. The visitor route extends for approximately 3 km.

 

Alistrati Cave is located 6 km southwest of the town of Alistrati, Serres, in the area known as Petroto. It is easily accessible from Drama, Kavala, and Thessaloniki (via Serres or Asprovalta).

Just a short distance from the cave’s technical entrance lies the Aggitis River Gorge.

 

The cave offers visitors:

The Alistrati area is also distinguished by its rich geological features, which have attracted the interest of both Greek and international scientists. The famous Alistrati Cave, with its unique stalactites and stalagmites, has become a landmark visited by thousands of people for its extraordinary beauty and serves as the area’s greatest attraction.

In addition, four more caves with significant prehistoric finds have been discovered in the area, making them among the most important archaeological caves in the region.

 

The Aggitis River Gorge, with its famous rock carvings on both sides and a length of 8.5 km, completes the remarkable geological landscape of the Petroto area.
